IR spectra of Triphenylcarbinol and Trimethylcarbinol in a series of solvents of increasing proton acceptor ability were measured. A detailed analysis of shape of the stretching vibration band of the proton donor group in these systems was carried out. The shape of the band was characterized in terms of profile indices, band moments, asymmetry factors, correlation functions and correlation times. The role of various shaping mechanisms is discussed in the framwork of recent theories of IR spectra of weakly H-bonded systems.
