Vibronic transitions are of an order of magnitude stronger than the electric dipole ones for crystals in which the investigated ion is placed at the center of symmetw. In such cry. stals pure electric dipole transitions are for bidden. However, the static interactions of the 5f electrons with the surrounding ligands causes mixing of the odd parity states with the 5f n slates, thus making the 5fn~5f n transitions partially electric dipole allowed. The coupling of the 5f n electrons with the dynamic crystal field (phonons and vibrations) give rise to vibronic transitions. The investigation of vibronic transitions is important in understanding the interactions between 5f n electrons and the lattice.
