The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of the copper(II) complex [Cu2(2-MPI)2(H2O)6](NO3)4(2-MPI)4(H2O)2 (where 2-MPI is 2-methylpyrido[2,3-d]imidazole, a biologically active ligand) is reported. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbca, with cell constants , and , Z = 8 and . The complex has a dimeric structure with antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu(II) ions (Tmax = 50 K, singlet-triplet energy gap = − 50 cm−1).
