Iron(III) porphyrins with phenyl groups as axial ligandsare paramagnetic intermediates formed during heme degra-dation by aryl hydrazines.1The corresponding model com-plexes such as PhFeIII(TPP) (TTP is the dianion ofmeso-tetraphenylporphyrin) can be prepared by the reaction of aGrignard reagent with ClFeIII(TTP),2,3and one such complexhas been characterized crystallographically.4PhFeIII(TPP) isa low-spin (S)1/2), five-coordinate complex that reacts insolution with dioxygen to form the corresponding phenoxycomplex, PhOFeIII(TPP).5
