The crystalline complex Rh[P(OPh)3]3CN was prepared by the reaction of Rh[P(OPh)3]3C1 with NaCN in chloroform. The compound crystallizes from chloroform solution as a solvate of formula RhCN[P(OPh)3]3 · 1.5CHC13. Crystals are triclinic, space group with a = 11.51(1), b = 10.91(1), c = 24.05(2) Å, α = 92.25(8), β = 97.91(8), γ = 106.05(8)°, U = 2865(5) Å3, Z = 2. The rhodium atom has the square planar coordination. The 31PNMR spectrum of Rh[P(OPh)3]3CN is of the A2BX type (A, B = 31P, X = 103Rh) with the same J(RhP) for all three phosphite ligands.
