In the title compound, C5H6O3, the ring adopts a slightly distorted envelope conformation. Adjacent molecules are linked via weak C—H...O contacts. Two phase transitions at temperatures of 154/183 and 172/192 K are observed for the title compound in a differential scanning calorimetry experiment; these occur below the structure determination temperature of 240 K.
