The compounds M3Lu(PO4)2:Yb3+ (M: Na, Rb) are synthesized by solid state reactions and characterized by XRD, absorption, emission, and excitation spectroscopy at 4, 10, and 293 K in the VUV to IR range. Together with the fundamental emission in the IR range, a broad band emission with two peaks in the UV region due
to charge transfer from phosphate groups to the metal ion occurs in the Na compound,
whereas the Rb compound does not show charge transfer luminescence.
