Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to distinguish different genetic types of apatite. By measuring the EPR signals of radical centers (O-, fluorine vacancy which captured electron, CO-3, CO3-3, PO2-4 radicals) and transition metal paramagnetic ions (framework Mn2+, out-of-framework Mn2+ and Fe3+) the correlation between characteristic spectra and genetic type of apatite has been found.
