Time-resolvedFT-IRstudiesoftwoliquid-crystals(4-decyloxy-4'-{(s)-2-methylhexyloxycarbonyl}tolaneand4-decyloxy-3'-fluoro-4'-{(i)-2-methyloctyloxycarbonyl}tolane)inSc*phasewereundertaken.Theeffectsoftemperatureandvoltageontherateofelectricfield-inducedreorientationofthemoleculeswerestudied.Accordingtothetheoreticalpredictions,theelectricfielddoesnotaffecttheresponsetime,whereastheinfluenceofthetemperatureismorecomplexandcannotbedescribedbytheexistingtheoreticalapproach.Theabsolutevalueoftheobservedintensitychanges(andtheirsign)duringtheswitchingcanbeexplainedbythestaticpropertiesofthesamples.AmarkedintensityreductionoftheC=0stretchingbandinthetime-resolvedspectra(ascomparedwiththestaticones)maybeduetotheexistenceoftwodifferentconformationsofthegroupinrelationtothecore.Asubstituentinthering(orthoposition)directlyattachedtothecarbonylgroupsplitstheC=0stretchingbandintoadoubletintheinfraredspectra.
