Absorption, emission and excitation spectra of anhydrous and hydrated praseodymium and cerium chlorides were investigated in nonaqueous solvents (CH3OH and iso-C3H7OH). The role of steric effect and solvation of salts on the intensities and energies of f–d and f–f transitions were analyzed. The changes of structure of the bands and the emission properties were discussed on the basis of the type of solvates formed in solution and compared to conductivity and ultrasonic velocity results. Effect of concentration on the excitation and emission spectra was also considered.
