Heavily densified Nd3+ doped silica ceramics were obtained by two different sol–gel based methods using distinct pH during gelation. The sample obtained at the higher pH showed more efficient emission. The morphology of the samples obtained was determined. It was found that Nd3+ ions form nanosize as well amorphous aggregates. The optical properties of Nd3+ doped silica ceramics were investigated.
